Aunty Julie's Reading Room was born out of the insight gained through years of teaching elementary learners from different academic, social and cultural backgrounds. Some of these learners have had various learning gaps that hampered a smooth pathway to achieving at least grade level literacy skills. This insight further lead to the revelation that such learning gaps were highly due to a lack in a learner's literacy foundation skills like phonological and phonemic awareness.
We have experienced the academic struggles that a learner faces in trying to navigate the different subjects across curricula due to their limited reading abilities, as well as the emotional hardship of parents who are not sure how to help. We have collectively contributed to the high level of self-confidence gained by learners who have been exposed to strategically planned Phonics lessons that gave practice to phonological and phonemic awareness skills which resulted in developed vocabulary, language comprehension and ultimately reading comprehension abilities.
It often "only takes a spark"-that is, giving students the self-confidence that they can actually learn to read and combining this confidence with teacher guidance to help them explore reading in a way that allow them to see themselves progress. There are no doubts that teachers today go above and beyond to cater to learners' literacy needs. However, class size may not allow them to spend the time needed to give focus to a single learner's specific literacy demands, so as to launch them on their individual path to achieving reading success; and at this point in the literacy journey Aunty Julie’s Reading Room can help.
We assess learners' current reading abilities, identify the specific lack in foundational literacy skills and then strategically plan the learning experiences that will directly target and strengthen the weak areas identified. Hence, helping the learner to close those gaps that delay their progress towards achieving their optimal reading comprehension abilities.
