Does Aunty Julie’s Reading Room only cater to learners in Elementary grades?
Aunty Julie’s Reading Room caters to learners by stage and not by age. A student may be above elementary grades but need help or refinement with certain aspects of reading that are hindering reading comprehension. In such a case, the learner is assessed to determine where the gap is present and then lessons are strategically crafted in a way that best cater to closing that gap by building skills that will help readers progress.
In other words, ALL ages are welcome and will be catered to!
What is the process my child goes through as part of Aunty Julie’s Reading Room?
When you sign up your reader, they will be assessed first with a phonemic awareness test to determine the barriers to their reading abilities as well as to determine their reading level. After these assessments we will plan learning activities aimed at closing the gap between where they are at the time of assessment and where they should be according to potential and or grade level reading standards.
Does Aunty Julie Caters to English Language Learners (ELLs)?
English Language Learners (ELLs), also referred to as Multi-lingual Learners (MLs) are recognized as those learners who are from a culture where English is not their first language.
Globalization has blessed us with diverse learners which make up a large percentage of schools specifically here in the United States. We are aware of the challenges that MLs face with reading English or becoming efficient in reading due to the differences in the alphabetic and phonemic awareness demands of English language in comparison to those within their own native language and reading development spectrum. That is, readers from a Hispanic background (for example) have only 22 phonemes within their alphabet system in comparison to our English speaking alphabet system that has 44. A Hispanic learner who is integrated in an English speaking classroom therefore will struggle with vocabulary, language comprehension, reading and reading comprehension if they do not successfully make the connection with both alphabet systems as a means of sparking their knowledge of letter sound relationship which it vital to the development of phonemic awareness and ultimately English language literacy.
Aunty Julie’s Reading Room can help to first connect and extend letter-sound relationship knowledge and then work on phonological and phonemic awareness skills to help MLs begin their journey towards acquiring foundation literacy skills of English Language.
Each session is for a period of 30 minutes.
The length of time spent on an assessment depends on the pace of the reader. If a reader does not complete assessment during the first session, the assessment will continue in the next session. This means you will need to book additional session/s for assessments to be completed. Parents will be informed of which assessment will be conducted as soon as they book and indicate that their child needs to be assessed.
YES! We absolutely do! Please email us in this regard before booking so we can make arrangements.
